Keep Calm and Take It OnThu, Jun 12th, 2014
Life is unpredictable and the unexpected happens. When the situations and circumstances of life are other than what you want or expect, there can be a tendency to resist what is happening. However, when you resist, you focus on and put your energy into what you do not want. Since what you focus on you create, when you resist you are actually creating more of what you do not want.
The first step to being calm in every situation is to accept the current reality, rather than resist it. Do not waste time and energy denying what is happening and wishing it wasn't. Instead, accept what is, adjust your perspective and evaluate your choices. Even though the current reality may not be what you would like it to be ideally, you get to choose how you are going to respond, including your demeanor. When you are calm, you are able to make better choices and decisions. You are empowered to take on whatever happens.
Take this one step further and look for the gifts in the situations that life presents to you. The gifts may be large or small and they do not always come in pretty packaging - sometimes they come in the midst of tragic and frightening circumstances. The gifts may be obvious, such as walking away from a serious accident, or they may be subtle, as in the kindness of a stranger or comfort at the time of a loss. They could be a lesson to be learned or taught, or an opportunity disguised as a problem. They could be finding the help and resources you need when you need them. Whatever form the gifts take, when you are open to seeing, accepting and having gratitude for them this positive focus empowers you.
Your opportunities to discover your strengths, resourcefulness and talents come most often through dealing with the challenges that life presents, rather than when things are going smoothly. Whatever circumstances you find yourself in, trust yourself that you will deal effectively with the current reality when you keep calm and take it on.
"Someday, everything will make perfect sense. So, for now, laugh at the confusion, smile through the tears and keep reminding yourself that everything happens for a reason."
